  • After the final of the Champions Trophy 2025, BCCI can make this senior player the captain instead of Shubman Gill. This player is considered to be the biggest contender to take over Rohit’s throne.

Shubman Gill: In the Champions Trophy 2025, India defeated Australia in the semi-finals and entered the title match. Under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, India has not lost a single match in this tournament so far and has entered the final in a brilliant manner, where it will be seen clashing against New Zealand on March 9 (Sunday) for the title. At the same time, it is being speculated that Rohit Sharma will say goodbye to ODI cricket after this, after which Shubman Gill is being seen as his successor, but now the name of a new senior player has joined the race for captaincy.

Shubhaman will not be captain!

After the retirement of regular Indian team captain Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, who performed brilliantly in ODIs, is being seen as his successor. Shubman Gill was appointed the vice-captain of Team India in ODIs for the first time on the Sri Lanka tour. While he is also playing the role of vice-captain of Team India in the Champions Trophy 2025, it is difficult for him to get the captaincy of Team India after Rohit because the 25-year-old young opener does not have captaincy experience at the moment.

Gill’s captaincy stats

Shubman Gill has captained India in only 5 T20I matches so far, out of which he has won four and lost 1. While Gill, who plays domestic cricket for Punjab, has not captained even once in List A, he took over the captaincy in 1 first class, but he lost in that too. At the same time, in 2019, Gill (Shubman Gill) led Punjab in 2 matches in T20, out of which he won one and lost one. The same has been his condition in IPL as well, after which after seeing these figures of Gill, BCCI would not want to hand over the captaincy to him so soon.

Shreyas Iyer will captain India!

After Rohit Sharma, India’s middle order batsman Shreyas Iyer can become the next captain of India. 30-year-old Shreyas Iyer has captaincy experience and has captained his domestic team as well as IPL. Iyer recently led Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 title under his captaincy, while in IPL 2024 itself, Iyer made KKR champion after 10 years under his captaincy. Iyer has captained Mumbai in 13 T20 matches, out of which he has won 11 and lost only two.

Iyer has captained Mumbai in 21 List A matches, out of which he has won 15 and lost only four matches. At the same time, the results of the two matches could not be decided. Iyer is a strong contender to become the next captain of India, but it will be interesting to see whether BCCI appoints Iyer as the captain of India or hands over the captaincy to inexperienced Shubman Gill.
