The selection committee headed by Ajit Agarkar has announced the 15-member players. Captain Rohit Sharma is going to lead this team once again, while his partner Shubman Gill has been appointed as the vice-captain of the team.

The special thing is that Rishabh Pant has also been included in this team, he is not sure to play even a single match. Despite his shameful statistics in ODIs, Ajit Agarkar has placed his bet on Pant, but this wicketkeeper may be seen on the field only to give water throughout the tournament.

Rohit Sharma is not going to give Rishabh Pant a chance to play even a single match in this tournament. This dashing player may have cemented his place in Tests and T20Is, but he is still struggling in the ODI format. Pant’s figures in ODIs do not look as good as expected from him. The veterans have even questioned Pant’s selection in the Champions Trophy 2025. The special thing is that whenever Pant has been tried on the big stage, the captain has only got disappointment. Now captain Rohit Sharma is not going to make the mistake of trusting this wicketkeeper-batsman again.

Pant was disappointed in the big tournament

Rishabh Pant has had the opportunity to play two T20I World Cups for India so far, but he has proved to be a flop in both tournaments. Pant was selected in Team India in the T20I World Cup 2022 and was then included in the playing XI for two matches, but then he could score only 9 runs in 2 matches at an average of 4.50, after which he was dropped from the team and KL Rahul took over wicketkeeping in his place.

After failing in 2022, Pant was once again given a chance by the BCCI and the captain in the T20 World Cup 2024, but this time too he failed to leave his mark and could score only 171 runs in 8 matches with an average of 24.42. He could not score a single half-century in these 8 innings. While in the final he returned to the pavilion without even opening his account.

In 2022, the Asia Cup was organized in T20I format, in which Pant played 4 matches for India, during which he got a chance to bat in three matches, but this time too he was able to contribute only 51 runs. It is clear from these figures of Pant that he always disappoints Team India on the big stage, after which he may have to spend the entire season on the bench in the Champions Trophy 2025.

Pant’s stats in ODIs

27-year-old Rishabh Pant’s statistics in the ODI format have not been as amazing as expected from him. Pant has played a total of 31 matches for India so far, in which he has come on the field to bat 27 times. During this time, his bat has produced only 871 runs at an average of 33.50. He has scored one century and 5 fifties in this format so far.

At the same time, Pant has played a total of 67 matches in List A, in which he has scored only 1789 runs at an average of 31.94. During this time, he has scored only 2 centuries and 11 half-centuries. Everyone was hoping that the selectors would give a chance to Sanju after looking at Pant’s ODI records, he has scored 510 runs for India in ODIs at an average of 56.66, during this time 1 century and 3 half-centuries have come from his bat. But despite this, he is not getting a chance to play in Team India.

KL will get the responsibility of wicketkeeping

Rishabh Pant has been included in Team India as a back-up wicketkeeper for the Champions Trophy 2025, while KL Rahul may be the first choice as wicketkeeper for the selectors and captain Rohit Sharma. KL has played the role of wicketkeeper for India many times in the ODI format, while Pant played the role behind the wicket for the entire season of the ODI World Cup 2023.

After this, this time too KL Rahul can certainly be the first choice of the captain and coach as wicketkeeper. In the ODI World Cup 2023, KL also impressed everyone with the bat and played many strong innings coming down the order. In the ODI World Cup, KL scored 452 runs in 11 matches for India at an impressive average of 75.33, while during this time he also scored 2 half-centuries and a century.
