T20 World Cup 2024 Semi Final 2:

The second semi-final match of T20 World Cup 2024 between India and England will be played in Guyana. Team India is fully prepared for this match. India has performed brilliantly so far. Victory will not be easy for England in this match. It will face a tough challenge. If we talk about the rules of the semi-final match, then a reserve day has not been kept for this match. If it rains then Team India will benefit.

India had won all its group matches. After this, it won all the matches of Super 8. Now Team India will face England in the semi-finals. Talking about England, it played 3 matches in Super 8 and won 2. The first semi-final match of T20 World Cup 2024 will be played between Afghanistan and South Africa. Reserve day has been kept for this match.

Reserve day not kept for India-England semi-final –

There is no reserve day for the second semi-final match of the T20 World Cup 2024. If this match is affected due to rain, then extra time has been kept for it. 250 minutes have been kept extra for this match. At the same time, there is 60 minutes extra time for the first semi-final match. Along with this, a reserve day has also been kept.

  • Reserve Day for First Match: The first semi-final between South Africa and Afghanistan has a reserve day allocated. This means if rain disrupts the match on the scheduled date (June 27th, 2024), there’s an extra day (likely June 28th) to complete the match.
  • No Reserve Day for Second Match: However, the India vs England semi-final does not have this luxury. If rain washes out a significant portion of the match on June 27th, the result will be determined based on the Duckworth-Lewis method (D/L) or the match might even be declared abandoned depending on the extent of the disruption.

Reasons for No Reserve Day:

There could be a few reasons behind this decision:

  • Scheduling Constraints: Having reserve days for both semi-finals might extend the tournament and create logistical challenges.
  • Focus on Final: Organizers might want a clear winner from each semi-final to avoid any last-minute delays impacting the final match.
  • Favorable Weather Forecast: It’s possible that weather forecasts for the India-England match venue are more favorable, reducing the need for a reserve day.

Impact:

This lack of a reserve day adds a bit more pressure to the India-England match. Both teams will be hoping for good weather to avoid an anti-climactic end due to rain.

If the semi-final is cancelled due to rain then India will benefit –

If the match between India and England gets cancelled due to rain, then captain Rohit Sharma will benefit. His team will directly reach the final. According to the rules, there is no reserve day for the second semi-final. Because of this, the team that tops the points table will go to the final. Team India is at the top of the points table in Group 1 of Super 8. India has played 3 matches and won all of them.

  • No Reserve Day: As we discussed earlier, there’s no reserve day allocated for this specific match.
  • Group Stage Performance: Since there’s no chance to replay the match, the team that finished higher in the group stage would progress to the finals.
  • India Topped Group 1: India dominated Group 1 by winning all their matches, while England finished second in Group 2 behind South Africa.

Therefore, if rain washes out the entire match, India would automatically qualify for the finals based on their superior performance in the group stages.

However, it’s important to consider a few things:

  • Partial Match Possible: If some part of the match is played before rain intervenes, the result might be determined using the Duckworth-Lewis method (D/L) depending on the extent of the playable overs.
  • Not Guaranteed Advantage: While India benefits from the absence of a reserve day in case of a complete washout, this doesn’t guarantee their victory in the finals. They will still need to perform well against the winner of the first semi-final (South Africa vs Afghanistan).

Overall, a rain-affected India vs England semi-final would be an unfortunate situation, but based on the current rules, India would qualify for the finals if there’s no chance to play the match at all.
