  • After losing the Test series against New Zealand, Team India is also looking very bad in the Border Gavaskar Trophy. After winning the first match against Australia, the Indian players have shown a shameful performance.

Gautam Gambhir: After losing the Test series against New Zealand, Team India is also looking to be a big flop in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. After winning the first match against Australia, the Indian players showed a shameful performance. Due to this, head coach Gautam Gambhir has come under the scanner. Now, a big revelation has been made about him before the Sydney Test. According to recent reports, he was not the first choice of BCCI for the head coach.

The big revelation about Gautam Gambhir before the Sydney Test

Gautam Gambhir, who will take over as the head coach of Team India in June 2024, is facing one stain after another. After losing the ODI series in Sri Lanka, New Zealand defeated the Indian team 3-0 in the three-match Test series at home. In such a situation, it was expected that the players would be seen showing their flair under the coaching of Gautam Gambhir in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. But the opposite story was seen in Australia. At the same time, now before the Sydney Test, a BCCI official has made a big revelation.

BCCI was forced to appoint Gautam Gambhir as the head coach

A senior BCCI official, on the condition of anonymity, told PTI that the Indian board was forced to hand over the responsibility of the head coach to Gautam Gambhir. He said,

“There is one Test match left and then there is the Champions Trophy. If the performance does not improve, Gautam Gambhir’s position will also not be secure. He was never the BCCI’s first choice (VVS Laxman was) and some well-known foreign names did not want to coach all three formats. So he was a compromise, obviously there were some other compulsions as well.”

position in trouble

It is worth noting that the Indian team has to play the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 after the Sydney Test against Australia. If the team is unable to perform well in this, then Gautam Gambhir’s situation will be in trouble. He is on the radar for his strategy. Gautam Gambhir does not have much experience of coaching in domestic cricket. In the IPL, he has worked as a mentor for Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders.

  • Support for Gambhir: Many believe that his experience as a player and mentor could have made him an exceptional coach. His ability to handle pressure and his strategic mind were seen as assets.
  • Criticism of the Process: Some have criticized the BCCI for allegedly prioritizing politics over merit. They argue that the decision should have been based solely on Gambhir’s potential to contribute to Indian cricket.
  • Alternative Suggestions: A section of experts has suggested other candidates, emphasizing the need for a coach with a proven track record at the international level.

The Road Ahead

As the dust settles on this controversy, it’s essential to focus on the future of Indian cricket. The chosen head coach, irrespective of their identity, will have the monumental task of managing one of the most scrutinized cricket teams in the world. For Gautam Gambhir, this episode might be a temporary setback, but it’s unlikely to deter him from contributing to Indian cricket in other capacities.

Conclusion

The debate over Gautam Gambhir’s potential appointment as head coach underscores the complexities of decision-making in Indian cricket. While the BCCI’s reservations are understandable to an extent, the controversy highlights the need for a more inclusive and transparent approach. Indian cricket’s success hinges on collaboration and unity, and every decision must prioritize the team’s best interests. Gambhir’s journey as a cricketer and leader is a testament to his resilience, and his supporters can only hope that he gets another opportunity to serve Indian cricket in the future.
