If this happens, Virat Kohli will return to Ranji Trophy after almost 12 years. Earlier, he last played for Delhi in Ranji Trophy 2012-13 season. However, after this Virat Kohli’s name was included in Delhi’s squad for Ranji Trophy 2019-20 season, but he did not play. But it is believed that he can be seen playing in the tournament after almost 12 years.

Earlier there were speculations that Virat Kohli might play in the Duleep Trophy tournament, but he did not play at the last moment. If media reports are to be believed, Virat Kohli will probably not play in the first half, but he can play in the second half.

The upcoming Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season is set to be a thrilling one for cricket fans, especially those following Delhi’s cricketing fortunes. In a major development, Indian cricket legend Virat Kohli will be donning the Delhi jersey once again, giving a massive boost to his home team. However, Delhi will also feel the absence of another stalwart, fast bowler Ishant Sharma, who has been ruled out of the tournament. Here’s a look at what Kohli’s inclusion and Ishant’s absence mean for Delhi’s Ranji Trophy campaign.

Kohli Returns to Delhi After Long Absence

Virat Kohli’s return to Delhi’s Ranji squad is monumental news for both the team and Indian domestic cricket. Kohli, who is primarily focused on international duties, hasn’t regularly featured in the Ranji Trophy in recent years. However, with the 2024-25 season approaching, Kohli’s decision to play for Delhi will be a major asset for the team. His presence not only boosts the batting lineup but also brings immense experience and leadership to the young squad.

  • Batting Prowess and Leadership: Kohli is arguably one of the greatest batsmen of this generation, and his addition to Delhi’s lineup gives them a world-class edge. His ability to anchor the innings, play under pressure, and dominate bowling attacks will be a nightmare for opposing teams. Moreover, his experience in handling tough situations, both at home and abroad, will inspire the younger players in the squad.
  • Mentorship for Young Players: Kohli’s presence on the field is not just about runs and centuries. His leadership and mentorship could be invaluable for Delhi’s up-and-coming talent. Youngsters like Yash Dhull and other emerging Delhi players will have the opportunity to learn directly from one of the modern greats. Kohli’s insights into fitness, mental toughness, and game strategy will uplift the team’s overall performance.

Ishant Sharma’s Absence: A Big Blow to Delhi

While Kohli’s inclusion is a reason for celebration, Delhi’s campaign has been dealt a blow with the absence of veteran pacer Ishant Sharma. Ishant, one of India’s most experienced Test bowlers, has been a mainstay for Delhi in the domestic circuit for years. His experience in leading the bowling attack has often been crucial for Delhi’s success in past seasons.

  • Leadership Void in Bowling: Ishant Sharma’s experience and ability to swing the ball on Indian pitches made him a leader of the Delhi bowling attack. His absence creates a significant void, and Delhi will have to rely on their younger bowlers to step up and fill his shoes. Ishant’s ability to extract extra bounce and seam movement, especially on flat Indian tracks, will be sorely missed.
  • Impact on the Pace Attack: With Ishant out, the burden will likely fall on bowlers like Simarjeet Singh and Navdeep Saini to lead the charge. While these pacers have shown promise, the lack of Ishant’s experience in high-pressure situations could be a concern for Delhi. His ability to bowl long spells and maintain pressure is something that will be hard to replicate.

Delhi’s Balance: A Mixed Bag

The mix of Kohli’s inclusion and Ishant’s absence leaves Delhi in an interesting position. The team’s batting is set to receive a massive upgrade with Kohli’s inclusion, while the bowling attack will need to regroup and work without the guiding presence of Ishant.

  • Strengthened Batting Lineup: With Virat Kohli joining forces with other key batsmen, Delhi’s batting lineup will be one of the strongest in the tournament. The experience Kohli brings will likely give Delhi an edge, especially in crucial situations where the team needs to post or chase large totals.
  • Bowling Will Be Tested: Without Ishant, Delhi’s bowlers will need to step up and show that they can handle the pressure of domestic cricket’s premier tournament. While there are talented pacers and spinners in the squad, they will need to perform at their best to compensate for the loss of a seasoned campaigner like Ishant.

The Road Ahead for Delhi

Delhi’s journey in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season is set to be an intriguing one. With a strong batting core led by Kohli and a promising, though inexperienced, bowling lineup, Delhi has the potential to be one of the top contenders. The team will need to find the right balance, with their youngsters stepping up in Ishant’s absence while capitalizing on Kohli’s brilliance.

Key Matches to Watch

Fans should mark their calendars for Delhi’s key clashes this season. Matches against powerhouses like Mumbai, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu will be the true test of how well Delhi can perform with their restructured squad. With Kohli in the lineup, these matches will gain added attention, as fans will be eager to see the Indian superstar back in action on the domestic stage.

Conclusion: A New Era for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy

The 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season will usher in a new chapter for Delhi cricket. With Virat Kohli’s return, there is renewed hope that Delhi can challenge for the title. However, Ishant Sharma’s absence means the team will need to rely on its younger bowlers to step up and deliver. The season promises to be an exciting one, as Delhi looks to make a strong impact in India’s premier domestic competition.

All eyes will be on Kohli as he brings his international pedigree back to the domestic arena, and Delhi fans will be hoping his presence can help lead the team to Ranji Trophy glory.
